Below are solutions to stopping a sliding glass door from being used as an access point in a burglary! These locks and devices will secure one of two problems with this entryway! Problem number one is to stop the door from sliding or being lifted out of the track! Problem number two is to stop the glass from being broken! Sliding glass door shatter into thousands of pieces when broken! The window does this so that you don’t get cut by bib pieces of glass. The down side is that the opening will allow a burglar to walk right in once broken, and carry out whatever he wants! We will address this in a separate section!
In the second video is the locking system that gets my recommendation! The Safe Slider Double Bolt Lock secures this opening and acts as a childproofing lock when installed high on the door! This lock replaces track poles and even the main door lock! A great investment for certain security!
Here is a very simple patio door lock that you can get from the local hardware, Home Depot, Lowe’s, or the links below!
There are several types of patio door track locks available here are a few: Most are inexpensive. The cheapest is just $0.74 cents! This inexpensive solution is really just a decorative way of installing a nail or screw through a window or patio door frame! I recommend this on all your sliding doors and windows. If you are on a budget, then get a box of 2″ nails or screws and use them! If you use a nail, drill a hole slightly bigger than the thickness of the nail through the first window frame edge and halfway through the second! Slip the nail in to trap the window frame from sliding even when the lock is disengaged or bypassed!
If you decided to use screws, drill a hole slightly smaller than the screw. Same idea… Drill through the first window (edge) and half way into the second window! Install the screw and a screw driver nearby so you can open it when you need too! Make sure you use a quality screw and one that is a Phillips cross head!
*** The glass in a window frame recesses about 1/3 of the way into the frame! If you drill slightly beyond the half way mark you will be just fine!

“Safe Slider Double Bolt Lock” Gets my personal recommendation for securing a patio door!

This device not only traps the door but can act as the main lock for a patio door too! They are $30 a lock, and then you don’t need a board or pole to block the door from sliding! You can still install a pole or board as a visual deterrent for a burglar to see!

This device replaces the wood stick that you have in the sliding door track. It also can be installed at whatever level is the most comfortable for you!
I recommend installing this at hip level or higher so that it can be seen from a distance! The first step in home, business, or apartment security is to appear visually like a hard target to rob! If an intruder see that you are prepared for him, he will find an easier target!
Here is a replacement style locking bar that replaces the stick in the track! This device makes it easy to reach and unlock by being able to install at different heights. This product is a bit pricey, but if you have the money this is a great secondary door slider locking device! You still should install a pin lock or the Double Bolt Lock to stop the door from being lifted!
Installing a board or stick in the track of a sliding glass door or patio door!
This next video show three way to secure a sliding glass door! I disagree with the first two as I feel that they can be bypassed by a first grader! Although I thought I would include it as an instructional for installing a board in the track of a sliding door! If you can’t afford the above solutions then at least do this! You can use old mop or broom stick, or just about any type of board that will fit behind the door slider. This again does not stop the door from being lifted, so install a nail pin lock as described above!

In the video you will see just how easy it is to get into a garage and completely bypass your homes security! You need to immediately fix this security problem by removing this feature completely!
Do you need this feature? Have you ever used this? Is there a way to wrap wire around the device preventing it from being used without cutting the wire?
* This device is used when the garage door opener breaks or the power goes out in your home! These are really the only times that you will ever need to use this device. So find a way to better secure it and leave it so you could use it if you still needed to! Just make it a lot harder to get this release to be triggered! Don’t just put some wire mesh around it and leave the rope and handle dangling out!
There are so many different types of garage door openers that it’s hard to come up with just one answer to this! I would remove the cord and trap or remove the device if possible!

Here is a simple way to secure your garage door!
This is an easy fix that may work for your model of garage door opener! Make sure that you use a zip tie that is strong enough to withstand a tug from a coat hanger or heavier gauge wire!

This may vary from garage door opener to opener! You can always do a quick search on the web with the make and model of the opener that you have! This is very important if you haven’t done it since you moved in! If you have a really old garage door, you should consider switching it out for a rolling code type of unit! The newer garage door openers have technology that alternates the code between the remote and the opener. This makes it more difficult to use a code searching device to break in!
If you dont have this button on the back of your opener, than your opener is real old! Check for a series of pins, between 8 and 10 located on the back of your opener! If you open up your remote control you will see that you have the same set of pins there too! If you see that just the first pin is different than the others, you have the factory setting still! You need to switch this up and just make sure that your remote control matches what you switch the code to on your unit! You can pick any series of numbers by either switching right to left or pulling the plastic pin cover and moving it to a new pin! You should get a new garage door opener though!

This is a great alternative to leaving a key under your door mat! Never leave a key outside of your home! Burglars know to check under the mat and to look for fake rocks, frogs, and other ways of hiding a key!

The six major security problems in residential building:
The first 5 are perimeter breach security problems! The sixth is what puts a time limit on the intruders presence in your home! The more of these security strategies that you can put into place in your home the more secure your building will become!
1) Lock Bumping:
Lock bumping is a major threat to your property that you need to address! With videos all over the internet on how to make bump keys, you should be seriously concerned about this threat! In my article on lock bumping, I showed what this security problem is and strategies on fixing this security threat! Bump keys are readily available for just about every lock deadbolt and keyed door knob! Whole sets can be bought for under $10 dollars, or individual keys made with just a file or grinding machine! Tutorials are all over You Tube teaching our troubled youth and aged criminals how to get into your home in seconds! Worse than this is the second major security problem, door jamb failure!
2) Door Jamb Failure:
Door jamb failure is just what it says. If a person where to kick your door about where the door knob is, it would cause door jamb failure! It takes less than a hundred pound of direct pressure on this area of most doors to completely split and bust the door jamb apart! In my article on door jamb failure, I showed you what this security problem is and several strategies on fixing this security issue! Both of these two security problems (lock bumping & door jamb failure) must be addressed together to resolve the number one way that a burglar or intruder gets into a home! And this needs to be done to every exterior doorway leading into your home, including the main garage inner doorway!
3) Garage Door Latch Release:
Recently a You Tube video made it onto the Florida nightly news! The video was entitled “How To Break Into A Garage In Six Second“! And that is exactly what it was about!This video was only 49 seconds long and gave explicit instructions on getting into a garage! Worse than that was the rash of home burglaries that ultimately brought this video to the attention of the Police and the public! Unfortunately this is not the only video on You Tube that gives instruction on breaking into a home! In fact there are more than 10,000 videos on the internet on everything from lock picking to steeling a car! Information on how to commit serious felonies is just a computer away! And with computers everywhere, this type of education serves only one purpose… Crime! My suggestion is for you to remove this latch from your garage door or to wrap wire around it so it cannot be used this easily! I will be posting on this problem shortly, and will give you security strategy for resolving this security problem!
4) Sliding Glass Door:
This security problem is an easy one to fix! Most of us are relying on a pole or brace to keep this entry way secure! That is not a good enough security strategy to secure this doorway! The problem is that the sliding door in this opening can most likely be lifted right out of the track even when locked! Criminals are using their hands or suction cups to lift the door just one inch, and then removing the door completely! It doesn’t matter if you have the door locked or even have a pole blocking the door from being slid open! The best solution to this security issue is to install a device that prevents the door from being lifted! You can achieve this by just drilling a hole through the edge of the frame of the door and into the stationary door. Then you just put a nail or a pin through the hole! 5) Glass Breakage:
This is another serious security issue that most homes face! Many homes have glass surrounding the front or rear doors that can be easily broken! This in many cases allows a burglar to reach right in and unlock your door! Most burglars are looking for the quietest way to get into your home! So the chances of them breaking a big window is less than breaking a small one. Either way their is a product that makes breaking through a window a serious hassle for a burglar! I will be posting an in depth article on these products, and how they can both stop an intruder and save you money on your utilities! That’s right, window security films not only make a window hard to get through. But also reduce heat transfer and ultra violet light from entering your home! 6) Security Alarm & Monitoring:
This is by far the most important security strategy of all of the six! It is very important to put a time limit on any intrusion into your home! And the great news is that there is a no contract, wireless, and cellular connected security system available! In other words this lock can be secured at night, and locked preventing it from being opened even with a key! This lock comes with a 6 tumbler pin system, a standard lock has 5 tumbler pins! This next product is the best way you can go to secure your exterior doors to the max! Remember that this is just reinforces the door jamb and you still need to install better locks that can’t be bumped! If you can afford to install both of these two products, you will have door security that just won’t ever fail!
In the above video you see Door Jamb Armor! If you are not really good at construction, you will need a contractor to install this product! This door jamb reinforcement will give you the maximum protection against door jamb failure! Door Jamb Armor reinforces both the door lock side and the hinge side of a door! In the above video is an easier to install door jamb reinforcement product! Safe Homes International Inc 55724 “Strikemaster II” Pro Door Frame ReinForcer – This is the Strike Master 2! This product just reinforces the lock side of your doors and not the hinge side! If you decided to get this product I suggest taking out 2 screws per hinge and replacing them with 3″ screws! Don’t forget to increase the security of your lock assemblies so that they cant be picked or bumped!
There are also products that reinforce the area around the knob and deadbolt! They help if you exterior door doesn’t have a metal plating and is all wood! DOOR REINFORCER BRS 9565 [Misc.]

Lock bumping is a process of inserting a special key into a lock,and giving it a tap with the intent to trick the lock into unlocking! The facts are very scary! Most door knob and deadbolt locks can be bumped in a matter of seconds allow a burglar access to your home! Below are some videos that I found on You Tube that show just how easy it really is! Lock bumping is a serious problem for several reasons. First, it lets anyone get into your home with very little effort and with about five minutes of practice! Second, not only can you buy bump keys off the internet, but you can make a bump key out of any ordinary old key you have! Third, most insurance companies require that you show proof of robbery! To do this you have to show forced entry. With lock bumping there is no sign that the home was robbed except for the things missing! This can give your insurance company an out, so check with your agent to make sure you are properly covered! Make sure there isn’t a statement like”policy doesn’t reimburse for non-forced entry claims”!
I decided to post this following statement because of the seriousness of it! This is a quote from the consumer affairs page on homeowners insurance! You should pay attention to this! A link to the whole page is below where you can look at just about any insurance company and the crap they have pulled against an insured. Take my words seriously… If you every need to file a claim with the insurance company, hire an attorney first before you call them! If you have a burglary or fire your first call should be to an attorney and not your insurance agent! If you haven’t taken picture of all your valuables, you should do that tonight! Just about everyone has a digital camera, take a few hundred pictures and put them on a disk or zip drive! Store them at your bank, at a friends, at work, or in a home safe! Perhaps you should make two copies and store them in two different places!

Remember your insurance agent is your friend as long as you are paying him and he doesn’t have to pay you! Never make any statements to an insurance adjuster, regardless of what he or she tells you! They are bad people with intent to do you very wrong! It is so worth paying for a public adjuster or an attorney! Remember this, if a third party produces the numbers on your loss, it will be dramatically higher than what your insurance company offers you! The difference will easily cover what you have to give an attorney!

In the first video the lock smith tells you that changing your locks is cheaper than an alarm system! That is not correct anymore! You can get an alarm system for your home without a contract! And it can be monitored for just $15 a month! You simply purchase the alarm system for $200 – $400, depending on the size of your home. You then get the monitoring without a contract for $15 a month! That’s 50 cents per day for monitored home security! Besides, lock bumping is just 1 of 6 major problems with your homes security that you need to fix! In the above video the company PickBuster tells about a simple way to treat your existing locks so they become more bump resistant! I have not tried this product and did not find any reviews on it! I thought I would include it as a cheaper solution to increasing your homes security! At the far bottom of this page is the solution I feel is the best for stopping lock bumping! It also stops the second major problem with your homes security, door jam failure or door kicking! This of course is second to installing a home security system from SimpliSafe! All the security in the world won’t help you if they get in and have no time limit on their shopping in your home!
The above video is a demonstration of what lock bumping is and how easy it can be done! The average lock kit containing a locking knob and a deadbolt cost between $25 and $65! The cheaper the lock the easier it is to bump! This is a serious problem as you will see in the next video!
In the above video, and I really thought about posting this! You can see that this guy bought pre made bump keys for just about every lock on the planet! And worse than that, he probably got them ALL for about $10! Even worse than that, is the brand new lock that he bumps with almost no effort! This is new right out of the package and has a GRADE 2 ANSI RATING! This isn’t a cheap lock and I bet the one on your front door isn’t as new or a brand as great as this one! Since I am an x contractor and I love Schlage locks, I decided to include a link to their top of the line locks! These locks are bump resistant! Make sure that the locks on your home have a level 1 security, or a ANSI 1 RATING! Ultimately my recommendation will be to use the ultimate lock , a Schlage ANSI 1 DOOR KNOB , and back all this up with a SimpliSafe security system! You can maximize or super size by installing Door Jam Armor!
In the above video some burglars get busted! Police have a very hard time catching these guys because they almost leave no trace! Worse the homeowners and apartment renters that get robbed. Loose there stuff and have a hard time getting their insurance to cover the losses, due to lack of forced entry! So for these guys to get caught, has to bring at least a little comfort to those people! As they stated in the video, these guys were doing this for years! And the Police actually got lucky and stumbled upon all the stolen items and then traced it to robbery reports filed!

If you decide to replace your locks, make sure that your install some form of a door jam plate reinforcement too! Don’t forget to bolt the safe to something if it is small and can be picked up and carried!
In the above video is what I recommend you install on each of your exterior doors! I love this video! This is a great deterrent to keep intruders out of your home! The ultimate lock system comes in a commercial and a residential grade! Your exterior door should be a fire resistant door that is tin or metal plated! This does not work if your door is a hollow core door or just wood! Actually, they are using a ram and for a man to be able to kick through a door is almost impossible! So for the majority of front, side, and rear exterior door this is a very practical means of giving you true security!
